Jerry Webber, Workshop Presenter

When I decided to get serious about nourishing an interior connection with God, a mentor suggested praying psalms from the Hebrew Scriptures. The psalms form a kind of prayer book, giving voice to the full range of human experience and emotion. I began praying psalms every day. I prayed them from different translations. I prayed them in season and out of season. I took their vocabulary as my own. Most of all, I learned from the psalms that I could be with God honestly, not sugar-coating my life or situation. God was resilient enough, steadfast enough to receive my honest prayer, no matter how angry, desolate, or vindictive I felt any given day.

I began writing prayers based on the psalms. They were an attempt at finding my own voice in the words of the ancient psalms. So on our workshop/retreat day together, that’s what I would like to help you do. I want to invite you into a process in which you can find your own voice in the psalms, in which you can make the prayers of the Hebrew Psalter your own prayer. We’ll use the tools of imagination and creativity (the tools always used by artists and poets) to explore psalms and find ourselves in them.

Bring along your journal and writing instrument.  If you have a favorite version of the psalms, you might bring that also.  All other materials and handouts will be provided.

Jerry Webber

I am a husband, father, son, brother, and friend. I find life in living as an explorer.  I love to explore landscapes that stretch me . . . the Ozarks of Arkansas, the beauty of British Columbia, the vistas of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the coastline of Nova Scotia, the mountains and river valleys of New Mexico.  The terrain of the spiritual landscape stretches me as well, and for the last 20 years I have given myself to the exploration of prayer and soul.  To that end, I write, teach, and companion persons on the spiritual journey.

Vocationally, I lead and give vision to The Center for Christian Spirituality, a ministry of Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

Note:  Jerry has a doctorate in Pastoral Theology and is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Churches.  Below are listed two books published by Jerry:

  • Fingerprints on Every Moment – 40 Psalm-Prayers in Contemplative Voice, Jerry Webber, published by The Center for Christian Spirituality, 2010.

  • Sometimes an Unknown Path – 40 Psalm-Prayers in Contemplative Voice, Jerry Webber, published by The Center for Christian Spirituality, 2009.
